Liquor Licenses

The State of California Alcohol Beverage Control licenses the sale of alcohol. The liquor license process is time consuming and drawn out. There is a great deal of paperwork. We have found that the process is similar to that for conditional use permits and variances, which we deal with all the time. In many cases a Conditional Use Permit (C.U.P.) will be required by the city before you can sell alcohol even after you have the liquor license.

There many different licenses depending upon what you want to do. Is it a new license? Is a license being transferred from one location to another or from one person to another? And will the alcohol be consumed on the premises (ON- SALE) or off premises (OFF-SALE.)

There are eleven differnt forms that can be downloaded from ABC's website. Do you know which ones you need to complete? One form requires a layout drawing of your premises. We have assembled a team, including architects, to help you with obtain all the approvals you will need.

ABC has placed a moritorium on new licenses in many cities and counties across the state. San Diego County is not on the moritorium list but the cities of La Mesa and El Cajon are on the list. Add to that the possibility that the police or sherrifs department in the jurisdiction of the premises may protest your application. The process can get complicated quite easily and quickly.
